RS 180 - David Roodman on "The Worm Wars"

Release date: March 19th, 2017

David Roodman

In this episode of Rationally Speaking, Julia talks with economics and public policy expert David Roodman about the "Worm Wars" in social science -- the debate over whether deworming pills are an effective way to fight poverty. Along the way they discuss how to analyze a study, the differences between  economists and epidemiologists, and how to make high stakes decisions when all your evidence is flawed.

Does deworming increase allergies and autoimmune disease?

Hey, you kind of glossed over education being purely a positional good. That sounds really crazy to me. Is there any reason to believe that?

Sorry for my comment above- ignore it.

Here is what I wanted to discuss. Is 6% rise in attendance significant enough? More so, how justified is the precieved correlation between the rise in attendance and earnings increase? I am very curious and somewhat sceptical.

Max raises an interesting topic, and that's actually the first thing I thought of when I saw that this episode was going to be about worms. Has de-worming contributed to certain first-world maladies? If I remember correctly, the idea is that the parasites modulate our immune system (via some protein or something), and as we evolved with them, our immune system compensated. So now when you remove the worms, the immune system is still over-compensating, potentially causing auto-immune issues.

Would love to hear an episode about this.
